Meet my Chiropractor!

Monday, January 15, 2018
In my "Reflecting on 2017" post, I shared how this year I want to get healthier than before. I want to get more active as well as just making sure overall I'm taking care of myself. We're only given one body and how you take care of it now sets the precedence of how it will function in the future. Today I want to talk about my experience with the Chiropractor and also introduce you to my Chiropractor.

Going to the chiropractor was something I had always wanted to do but wasn't sure how to go about finding a doctor who was right for me. I've always had back aches, lower back problems and would wake up with a stiff or sore neck. I can "crack" my back on my own but there were things that I couldn't do myself that made me desire going to a chiropractor more and more. I was doing Yoga to relieve that lower back and spine pressure but that wasn't enough anymore. I did a TON of research online, watched hundreds of youtube videos of adjustments (they're my favorite things to watch now besides beauty videos) and read everything I could about the benefits of going. This spiked my interest times ten and I knew that I NEEDED to go to a chiropractor. Super random, I found a groupon for a local chiropractic center that offered a consultation, x-rays, an examination and one adjustment. I bought it on a whim with the mindset of, "I'll try it and if it doesn't do anything then I didn't invest a ton of money upfront." My first time going, I was a little nervous because I had already had all of these preconceived notions about what it would be like; boy was I wrong. I had a consultation as well as my x-rays done. The entire staff was so nice and made sure I was comfortable the entire time. My next visit was my examination and first adjustment and this made me super nervous. Was it going to hurt!? Will I feel better after it's over?! These were all the things going thru my mind. That appointment went great and I was put at ease and excited for my next visit.

Fast forward a bit...I had been seeing one particular doctor and they were out for the day and was asked if I wanted to see someone else. I said sure and this is where I found the PERFECT doctor for me, Dr. Kat Walter.

Dr. Kat Walter

She has been my saving grace with my back and making sure I feel better when I leave versus when I come in. She's super nice and so personable and that makes the experience that much better. When you're going to a doctor you want to feel comfortable, like you can talk to them personally and not feel like just another patient. Dr.Kat always makes an effort to ask how I'm doing and we always get on the topic of beauty and fashion, all things I love! She's seriously one of the sweetest people and I'm so thankful and blessed to have her as my doctor. I asked her a TON of questions so you all could get to know her better and also have her answer some common questions that you might have. I made sure to throw in some beauty and fashion questions as well because she always looks great when I go in for an appointment. Here we go!

1. Tell us a little about yourself.
*I'm Kat. I grew up in Virginia Beach but actually a little bit of everywhere, close knit Navy family, thinks almond and peanut butter go with everything, recently went from vegetarian to vegan, love to be active, live for my family and friends, and of course my dog Buddy.

2. What is Chiropractic?
*I believe the Association of Chiropractic Colleges defines it perfectly. Chiropractic is a healthcare discipline that emphasizes the inherent recuperative power of the body to heal itself without the use of drugs and surgery. The practice of chiropractic focuses on the relationship between structure (primarily the spine) and function (as coordinated by the nervous system) and how that relationship affects the preservation and restoration of health. In addition, doctors of chiropractic recognize the value and responsibility of working in cooperation with other health care practitioners when in the best interest of the patient.

3. What are the benefits of seeing a chiropractor?
*Oh where do I begin...there are so many benefits! Really! Range from back pain, neck pain, headaches, ear infections, digestive disorders, neurological disorders, high blood pressure...honestly anything that is controlled through the nervous system can be directly impacted through chiropractic. This is because the main focus of chiropractic is nervous system health.

4. What are the common misconceptions about chiropractors?
*We are only seen for back and neck pain. Sure we assist with that, but the goal of the chiropractic adjustment is to remove nervous system interference so that the body possesses an optimal environment to heal and maintain health. Restoring motion and alignment of the spine is the first step in helping the rest of the body to self-regulate, self-maintain and self-restore. This is a result of the direct neurological input the spine has on the rest of the body. 90% of stimulation and nutrition to the brain is generated through spinal movement. Movement is life, keeping our spine moving and healthy is essential to a long healthy life.

5. What inspired you to want to be a chiropractor?
*Thinking back I now realize it was a combination of a few things that lead me to this. When I was a freshman in high school my father was diagnosed with a neurodegenerative disorder. They say when you are diagnosed with a disease you can either accept the diagnosis or you can take this as an opportunity to learn as much as you can about your health and forever change your life. My father took the allopathic route of injections for about a year and was not improving so my mother took him to a naturopath. From that point we lead a very holistic lifestyle, and my father improved. After undergrad I don't know if it was luck or fate that landed me a job with a chiropractor, but I was absolutely blown away by what I saw there. I had never seen so many people get well so fast. The fact that there was a way to help people, without the use of medication, really resonated with my lifestyle. I knew without a doubt that was what I had to be.

6. How long have you been a chiropractor?
*I graduated from Life University in 2014, but had been living the chiropractic lifestyle long before that.

7. Did you always know this was what you wanted as a career?
*Actually no. I went through undergrad with the intent of continuing on to physical therapy. I ended up getting the best of both worlds because, like many other chiropractors, I also got certified in physiotherapy.

8. What do you love about being a chiropractor?
*I absolutely love everything there is about being a chiropractor. I truly do love what I do, but it is probably my patients that I love the most about this job. I learn so much from them.

9. If you weren't a chiropractor what job do you think you would have?
*This is hard because I love being a chiropractor. I love everything about it, but I guess I would have to say a Naturopath.

10. How do you stay fit in order to perform the physical activities that are required for your job?
*It is a rather physical job, so working out is a priority to me. I also really enjoy it. It's my "me time" when I clear my head from the day. I do kickboxing, run and recently began working with weights.

11. You're always so busy during the week with work, what do you like to do on the weekends and during your down time to relax and have fun?
*I love to try new restaurants or cook dinner with friends. During the week I stay pretty busy, so weekends are all about friends.

12. What is one beauty product you can't leave the house without?
*It's a tie between mascara and chapstick. I feel naked without them.

13. What is your beauty staple?
*Coconut oil. It's the first thing I put in and on my body. In the morning, I oil pull with it while I shower, then brush my teeth with it in my homemade toothpaste, it's my body lotion, hair mask, eye make up remover. A close second is Dr. Bronners oil soap, I truly believe there are about a million different uses for both of those products.

14. You're always dressed so cute for work! Where are some of your favorite places to shop?
*Express, hands down. I wear the Portofino shirt like it is my uniform.

15. Fun fact about yourself?
*I can speed spell entire conversations. It was a way my mom and I would talk to each other around my sisters growing up when we didn't want them to know what we were saying.

16. What's the best advice you've ever been given?
*My mom would always tell me, "You can do anything you put your mind to." She couldn't have been more right about that!

I hope you guys enjoyed getting a chance to learn about Dr. Kat as well as really learn more about chiropractic. If you ever get the chance to go, definitely do it, you won't regret it.
